DESCRIPTION
Amjad Islam Amjad wrote the screenplay for 'Waris', which was found to be the most popular play ever from PTV, in a survey conducted in 2002.
'Waris' takes a look at the feudal system which has inhibited Pakistan's growth and to this day is destroying the country. The central role of a zamindar is played by Mehboob Alam, whose portrayal of Chaudhary Hashmat will ever remain embedded in peoples memories. His eye movements, facial expressions and dialogue delivery, all add to his intimadating demeanor.
Cruel, heartless, greedy, believing themselves to be above one & all, Chaudhary Hashmat, his zamindar sons & nephews make life miserable for the local villagers. They not only effect the lives of the villagers but their presence is also felt in the nearby city of Lahore which they visit on a regular basis. No one who comes within their reach is safe- they have no friends- even the most loyal of servants isn't safe.
The streets of Pakistan used to be deserted whenever this play was on. People used to rush home to catch Mehboob Alam, Abid Ali & Firdous Jamal, the stalwarts of Pakistani television, clash with each other with each in pursuit of their own goals. |
