Just Indian depicts this struggle through the eyes of its four principal characters, all young and representing two poles of the Indian community – The FOBs (Fresh off the Boat) and the ABCDs (American Born Confused Desis [Indian]). Though deep-rooted differences exist, there is an underlying need for both groups to strive to mend the fences that keep them apart. And herein lies the basic premise of the story that underpins the narrative of the film. ABCDs, raised and nurtured in American society, struggle to understand the overhanging culture of their parents from which they sprung, while FOBs, Indian-born and raised, try their best to learn how to assimilate into America’s melting pot. During the course of the film, colorful vignettes are used to vividly depict the many misconceptions and stereotypes both groups must contend with as the backdrop of New York City parades before us --- a process that proves to be both entertaining as well as illuminating. The movie is predominantly in English with some Hindi." |
