Director Mahesh Maathai, who’s moved to feature films from a top-notch career in ad-film making, portrays the devastating Bhopal gas tragedy in this chilling film. The story depicts Verma (Kay Kay) and Tara (Nethra Raghuraman) who are newly weds settled down in Bhopal. Verma works at the Union Carbide plant while his friend, Bashir (Naseeruddin Shah), a former employee at the plant, now drives an auto rickshaw for a living. When Tara goes home to have a baby, Verma and Bashir visit a brothel for a night’s entertainment. The gas leak at the Union Carbide factory takes place that night. More than ten thousand people are killed instantly, while uncounted thousands are maimed for life. Compounding the tragedy, there is no authority that can prevent more disasters from taking place, such as a train pulling into Bhopal station the morning after the gas leak, when people are still breathing the toxic fumes and dying. Great performances from the entire star cast, including Kay Kay - who is a seasoned theatre actor - and an effortless oeuvre from Naseeruddin Shah. The music includes major talents like Jagjit Singh, Ila Arun and Lucky Ali. Amitabh Bachchan lends his mellow baritone to a voice-over in the film. |
