Reputedly based on the life of Indira Gandhi, this is the story of Aarti (Suchitra Sen), the attractive daughter of a leading politician (Rehman) who falls in love with a businessman JK (Sanjeev Kumar). Her father requires her constant help in his profession, leading to conflict in Aarti's relationship with her husband. Torn between loyalty towards her father and love of her husband, Aarti must choose between the two. Her own ambitions compel her to opt for power and politics. The couple separates, only to meet by chance, many years later, when both of them are much older. Regrets fill the moonlit night, as R.D. Burman's poignant 'Tum Aa Gaye Ho' provides an unforgettable backdrop. |

Whether or not this is based on the life of Indira Gandhi (I don't see how it could be), this is a superbly directed and beautifully acted film about the love between two mature adults. There's an understated, touching quality to the two veteran actors' portrayal of the two protagonists, Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra are perfectly cast. The songs in the film are indeed memorable, even transcendent. Watch for the song set among the majestic ancient ruins, which is supposed to take place at midnight but is actually filmed in the early morning hours, which lends it an even more haunting aura. |
