You have guessed it rightly, my name is Satya. Little TARA told me that it is written on the wall of my hut along with the sketch of a tiffin carrier. And rightly so, because to carry tiffin boxes is my profession. I have no one of my own in this world. But to say that I am alone would be true. God lives with me in my hut. He just watches me but never speaks to me… And have you met Gauri? She also carries lunch boxes and is a constant plain in the neck. She not only makes Goo Goo eyes at me but threatens to marry me and then… Silly Girl…but I have a feeling she really loves me. And then there is a Prasad babu, the Police Inspector. He is a funny fellow. His old mother cannot persuade him to get married. His is but one aim, to destroy the entire under world of the city. Shardaji really make a sweat teacher in the girl’s school. I would do anything for her. It was her money that I went to deposit in the bank, I duly put the currency notes in the passbook and properly put the book in the wooden box in the bank, but nobody would believe that the money was deposited. I was completely finished, I couldn’t show my face around. There was but one way out…Suicide. And lo! At the last moment God spoke to me. He called me by name… Only he had taken the shape of a little girl named Tara, the only daughter of very rich parents. Tara was starving for parental love. Her father couldn’t take a minute off the money making game and her mother, an M.L.A. and a social leader, was too busy creating name and fame. And all that I had to offer the little angle was love. She in turn transformed my very existence. As a daughter she would fill me with human warmth while she would put me to sleep like a mother. She would share my joy and sorrow like a friend and would turn into a stern teacher to make me learn how to read and write. The vision of Satya, the `Tiffin-Walla’ becoming a regular Policeman was also hers. But Tara’s parents wouldn’t approve of this strange love affair… The rest of the story, I will tell you when we meet at your favourite theatre. |
