Raj Babbar started his career with Punjabi films. Some of his blockbuster hits are Prem Geet, Insaaf ka Tarazu and Aitbaar. He has also made headlines for his relationship with the talented actress Smita Patil. Incidentally the last movie she acted in, was indeed with Raj- Waaris!
Raj Babbar's name needs no introduction to all and sundry in India. Born to humble parents at Agra in Uttar Pradesh he has risen in a couple of decades to heights few achieve in a much longer lifetime. He has distinguished himself in reel life as well as real life. Today his persona dominates any film in which he acts and also the political life of India. Raj Babbar was popularly elected a member of Lok Sabha.
Sharp and focused, Raj started to make his mark early in life. While studying from Agra he became a socialist student leader under the tutelage of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia. His commitment to the cause of society based on social justice became more and more evident and firm as he closely interacted with his father-in-law Syed Sajjad Zaheer, noted Urdu poet. a committed Marxist and a strong nationalist and later on with Shri V. P. Singh, former Prime Minister of India. Raj moved to Punjabi University, Patiala for further studies in dramatic arts. He continued at the National School of Drama and graduated from the distinguished institution working under the able guidance of theatre doyen Ebrahim Elkazi. Raj made a mark with his powerful and versatile performances in Lorca's YERMA. opera NADIR SHAH, Shudrak's Sanskrit classic MRICHCHKATIKAM, Dr. Bharti's ANDHA YUG and DANTON'S DEATH.
His fame brought Raj into films and he began his film career as a leading man in 1979. To date Raj Babbar is active in cinema having worked in over 150 films. In his long and illustrious screen life Raj has played variety of distinguished roles in films like INSAAF KA TARAZU, AAJ Kl AWAAZ, NIKAH, AGAR TUM NA HOTE, GHAYAL, KALYUG. MAYA MEMSAAB, UMRAO JAAN, BARSAAT AND SHAHEED UDDHAM SINGH.
Over the years Raj has traveled extensively all over the globe and received many awards in the field of acting as well as social work. Raj is closely associated with International Body for Human Rights and NGO's working in the fields of Aids, Drug Abuse, Handicapped and Mentally Retarded. He also is an active producer of films and television series.
Now both his children- Arya Babbar (Ab Ke Baras) & Juhi Babbar (Kaash Aap Hamare Hote) have burst onto the silver screen.
