Had not she to be an actress, Esha Deol probably would be a football player. It was one of the games that stood to be her favourite. In fact she was even voted to be the captain of the football team. It was only when she completed school from Jamanabai and stepped into college that Esha decided to take up acting as a full time profession. Her parents, Dharmendra and Hema were stalwarts, and she needed no introduction to the film industry. Conservative Dharmendra was not comfortable with the idea initially. But he later relented. Esha was already well versed with the art of dancing; she just had to train herself in acting and enrolled herself in an acting school, Esha Deol was all set to be launched. When papa Deol proposed that he would launch her under their home production, Esha declined saying that she wanted to make it on her own.
When producer Boney Kapoor offered her Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche, a role too good for a launch, Esha consented to make her debut in the film. Aftab Shivdasani and Sanjay Kapoor were zeroed in on to play the male leads in the film. The film had Esha Deol play a shattered wife married to a sex maniac, played by Sanjay Kapoor. So when Aftab professes love for her, she rejects him, somehow still bitter about the past. The film predictably bombed at the box-office. "People expected me to be myself in the film. Bubbly and enthusiastic! But I wasn't like that at all! I was serious. I guess that worked against me," she said.
Meanwhile a company, which prided in bringing out finest men's wear announced its decision to produce a film. Pantaloons launched Na Tum Jaano Na Hum. Esha Deol was chosen to play the lead opposite superstar Hrithik Roshan. Saif Ali Khan was also to play a substantial role in the film too. The film based on You've Got Mail met with average success at the box-office.
It was by now apparent that Esha had a long way to go to gain foothold in the industry. The release of Kya Dil Ne Kaha with Tusshar Kapoor made matters worst because it plummeted at the box-office. Esha still has a few films in hand to prove herself. One of the few is another film with Pantaloon. As for her personal life, Esha is happy that the few friends that she had made in school are still in touch with her. Besides socialising, Esha enjoys her dance practice sessions. "I also enjoy eating," she laughs. Esha is about being a scorpion. "So if you rub me the wrong way you have had it. I sting like poison! So you better be aware!".
