Raj Kanwar's Andaaz stands to be the first film that had Ex-Miss Universe and Ex-Miss World coming together for the first time. Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra dropped their defenses and willingly costarred together in the film with Akshay Kumar as their costar. Few know that Lara Dutta is the youngest daughter of Wg.Cdr. LK Dutta (retired) and Jennifer Dutta. Born on 16th April 1978, Lara looked a perfect doll and was the apple of their eye. Her siblings of course did not mind it. Lara's family later moved to Bangalore, India from where she completed her school. Lara graduated in Arts passing out with flying colours with English being her major language. She then took up Economics with Bombay University.
Graceful and beautiful friends suggested that she participate in the Femina Miss India contest. And not surprisingly Lara was chosen out of the 60,000 applicants to participate in the contest. And not surprisingly again Lara was crowned Miss India. In fact even before the Miss India contest happened her sister Sheryl had already send her photographs to ad agencies but Lara was not sure whether she wanted to take up modeling as a full time career.
Lara of course today is termed as the first Miss Universe of the new millennium. She still cannot forget May 12, 2000 when she was made to wear the coveted Miss Universe crown. "It's the most unforgettable moment of my life," she smiles. Gradually offers to model began pouring in and Lara was often seen promoting products like Synergie, Ceat, Coke, Sprite, Bombay Dyeing and Siyaram.
Besides modeling offers, Lara Dutta lived upto her commitment as Miss Universe. She was appointed as the Ambassador of the United Nations and also was made to be a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Population Fund. Lara also actively participated in programs bringing about AIDs awareness in the world. Miss Universe also gave her an opportunity to fulfill her biggest dream. "I love to travel. I love to look at the architecture and go to theatres abroad," she reveals. Lara is now looking forward to the release of Apurva Lakhiya's Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost that has Abhishek Bachchan as her costar. "I hope it will receive a good response just the way my debut film Andaaz did," she says. Acting before camera is okay! Lara's prime achievement will be when she does theatre and performs before a live audience. "It gives me a kind of a kick. I'm dying to do theatre," she says.
As for her personal life, Lara Dutta is going steady with model Kelly Dorgi for quite sometime now. But marriage is far off thought. "I want sometime for myself. Come on I'm just 23! But I already feel like a 30 year-old. I guess the industry kind of grows you up," she concludes.
