Born Sep 03
His was the most talked about debut! Vivek Oberoi was already a hot property even before the release of Company. Hair falling over his forehead, hard face with that innocent appeal made girls go weak in the knees! What's more, the character he played in his debut film that of an underworld kingpin only added the charisma to his persona. Company when released met with adequate success in Mumbai and Vivek was heralded as the next best thing after Shahrukh Khan. His success was compounded with the fact that he had bagged the Best Debutant Awards. The glory was intimidating. The hype too strong. The Oberois wanted to make the most of Vivek's new found success. He was splashed across on magazine covers, albeit too much. The naysayers whispered that because Suresh Oberoi had missed out on the limelight and he wanted to his son to cash the most on it. But Vivek Oberoi went a bit overboard. The infamous press conference that Salman Khan had threatened him questioning him about girlfriend Aishwarya Rai proved to be a major setback for Vivek Oberoi. People began to joke about him. There were SMS jokes too. Worst was when he named prominent leading ladies like Rani Mukherjee, Diya Mirza and Somy Ali accusing him of having had a one night stand with them.
The press conference sparked off flurry in the film industry where most people film fraternity opined that it was a matter that could be sorted out internally. Suresh Oberoi was embarrassed by his son's behaviour and publicly apologized for his behaviour. But the unforgiving film industry did not understand this. Vivek Oberoi was quickly replaced as a lead actor in films. Producers did not want to sign him anymore. Director kept away from him. "what if he threw a press conference?" people laughed. Sanjay Leela Bhansali ridiculed him. Meanwhile Road was released and declared a flop. Ramgopal Varma felt that because the film had songs it didn't work at the box-office. But he also in a subtle way declared that he would never with Vivek Oberoi again.
Dum followed. Another flop. Vivek Obreoi's career seemed to be on the downslide. His hopes were now heavily pinned on Shaad Ali's Saathiya that told the story about marital discord. And his hopes did not dash. The film lived upto its promise giving Vivek's career a slight push.
But his personal life was becoming steamy day-by-day. His engagement to longtime girlfriend Gurpreet Gill was called off. Insiders have it that it was Vivek who drove her to break the engagement. Gill maintained a dignified silence. There were rumours about Vivek being serious about Rani. The couple insiders claimed had been particularly close during the making of Saathiya. But the equations between Rani and Vivek changed the minute he signed Samir Karnik's Kyon Ho Gaya Na. Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi hit it off instantly. They were even signed to do the Coke ad. Romance is already in the air. In fact when Vivek met with an accident recently while shooting for Mani Ratnam's film in Kolkatta , Ash made it a point to fly down all the way from London to meet him. Reports in newspapers had it that Ash and Vivek while shooting in London were having a ball of a time together. They have been paired in not less then five films together-samir Karnik's Kyon Ho Gaya Na, Roeland Joeffrey's The Invaders, Pritish Nandy Communications remake of Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulma, Rajkumar Santoshi's Azizun Bai and another film.
Vivek has also been roped in to play the lead in Indra Kumar's Khujlee with Bipasha Basu. How far his professional and personal life successful remains to be seen!
