Raakhee was one of the married actresses to make it big in the Hindi film industry. Bengali by origin, Raakhee was married to Ajoy Biswas, a journalist and a director. Before her entry into films, her husband rejected her for his film Sambandh. Raakhee got her first break with Rajshri Films Jeevan Mrityu in 1970, where she was paired opposite Dharmendra. The film was a grand success and her career took off smoothly. Unfortunately, their marriage suffered and she opted for a divorce. Raakhee was considered to be one of the most beautiful actresses. Her film Daag won her several admirers. It was at this time that she met Gulzar and got married to him at the peak of her career. But unfortunately, this marriage too didn't work out and they got separated. Raakhee made a comeback to films yet again and gave several silver jubilee hits like Tapasya and Kabhi Kabhie in the year 1975, Trishul and Muqaddar Ka Sikander in the year 1978, Kaala Patthar in the year 1979 and Laawaris in the year 1981. Interestingly, both her husbands were romantically involved with Meena Kumari. A Meena Kumari hang-up has always been visible in Raakhee. This turned her into an alcoholic that in turn aged her faster. But, like Meena Kumari, her strong point was an expressive face and an equally animated dialogue delivery, which helped her make her presence felt. Unlike most of her contemporaries who could not survive in the industry for long, Raakhee did. She happily accepted motherly roles. She even agreed to play mother to Amitabh, who was once her romantic lead. Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak and Baazigar and Karan Arjun were the super duper hits in which she played the mother around whom the plot revolves.
