Few know that Juhi's debut film as an actress was Sultanat and not Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak as believed. Sultanat also marked the debut of Jennifer and Shashi Kapoor's son Karan Kapoor. Though the film had top stars like Sunny Deol and Sridevi, Sultanat sank without a trace. The Indian audience just could not come to terms with a phirang-karan Kapoor being a hero in their films. As for Juhi-her filmi career that she might have hoped would take off with Sultanat came to grinding halt. Even the Miss India title did not help her bag films.
Meanwhile Mansoor Khan, nephew of producer Taahir Hussain and son of Nasir Hussain, wanted to make his debut as a director. Taahir Hussain's son Aamir Khan wanted to make his debut as an actor. With the help of their respective fathers they decided to launch a film. It had a typical story about teenage romance opposed by rival families. While Mansoor had found his hero in Aamir Khan, he had not yet found his heroine. Mansoor screen tested innumerable girls. But none could live up to his expectations. Then on the recommendation of common friends Mansoor Khan and Aamir Khan approached Juhi Chawla. The next day they screen tested her. Juhi Chawla had her fingers crossed, hoping that would sign her for the film even though she did not have much hopes about the film because it had a totally new director, new actor and a new music director. There were no expectations at all. But Juhi was the chosen one. The unit soon began shooting at various locales of India. Because it had a new hero Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla who had not films on hand the film could be completed within a stipulated time period. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak when released broke all box-office records. It was not only the lead pair Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla but also its music that became a rage overnight. For Juhi QSQT meant a fresh lease of life. It gave a fresh lease to her dead end career that she had practically given up on. There was a streamline of producers and directors wanting to sign the hot pair for their films. However none of them could create the magic of QSQT. The same held true of all Juhi films that she had signed with other heroes. Juhi's career hit an all time high when Yash Chopra signed her for Darr. The role was first offered to Raveena Tandon. She turn it down because it involved a little bit of exposure. Juhi who had earlier done a guest appearance in Chopra's Chandni immediately agreed to do the film. Darr also marked the coming together of Sunny Deol and Shahrukh Khan with the Chopras for the first time. Aamir Khan was first offered the role eventually done by Shahrukh Khan. Aamir insisted on joint narration with Sunny which Yash Chopra refused. Aamir opted out of the film. "I will never work with Yash Chopra again," he declared. When the film released though it was a hit, it cracked the Chopra's relationship with the Deols permanently. Sunny Deol was disappointed with the way his character was projected what with Shahrukh Khan walking away with all the sympathy in the climax. Darr however fetched Juhi her very first Best Actress Award.
Amongst others Juhi's notable films are Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. The film fetched her her second award under the Best Actress Category. The pair gave a hit in Ishq too. That was the last film that one saw them together. It was on the sets of Ishq that Juhi and Aamir friendship cracked. Aamir's penchant to play pranks was not taken sportingly by Juhi who was in a disillusioned mood then. She fired him. Aamir Khan withdrew completely. Aamir and Juhi never spoke to each other for six years till they bumped into each other recently at a party. The two laughed and made up.
As for Juhi's personal life, it took a major turn when she lost her mother in an accident while shooting for a film in Prague. Her mother Mona had gone for her usual morning walk when while crossing the road a truck rammed her over. When her mother did not return Juhi panicked. Shahrukh Khan and the unit members called the police. The police informed them about the accident in which a woman had been killed. Friends close to Chawla reveal that it was during this time Shahrukh Khan stayed up with Juhi all night consoling her over her mother's unfortunate demise. The incident laid bricks of a new friendship between Khan and Chawla. The duo along with director Aziz Mirza decided to launch a joint venture and thus Dreamz was born. As for Juhi's love life it was always Jai Mehta for her. Juhi married Jai in a span of few months after her mother's demise. But never admitted her marriage in print. Juhi gave birth to a baby girl Jhanvi and is eagerly awaiting to be a proud mother again sometime in June.
After Asoka and Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla are also looking forward to the release of their third film Chalte Chalte.
