It's said that relationships are driven by society while love is something that an individual develops! The age-old saying has proved right in all the times. But what about the present times? A time when life is a frantic journey where there is hardly any time left for building relationships? Where is the place for love then? Does it emerge out of a relationship? Or it doesn't really need an invitation to happen by itself?
Can love be so powerful that it could take on relationships...and break them forever? The film narrates the tale of two families - Sarans and Talwars. While Sarans are headed by Kamaljit Saran [Kirron Kher], mother of Dev [Shahrukh Khan], Talwars have Samarjit Singh Talwar [Amitabh Bachchan] as the eldest with Rishi [Abhishek Bachchan] as his son! That's not all as the well-to-do families also have a female member in the form of Rhea [Preity Zinta], Dev's wife and Maya [Rani Mukherjee], Rishi's better half.

What is it that brings the members of two families so close that it pains to say 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna'? Each of the young couples comes with their own set of frustrations, desires and expectations. Each of the young couples has their own problems, their own battles to fight. And soon there comes a time when a member from each of the two couples start depending upon each other to comfort themselves! They are Dev and Maya. Very much married. But now looking upon each other for the best moments of their lives!

What was it about the relationships shared by Dev-Rhea and Rishi-Maya that set them apart? And what is it that would get them closer again? Both Dev and Maya have a handicap that keeps them unhappy about their married lives. An unfortunate incident changes Dev's personality completely. Handicapped, he starts looking at everything with a negative mindset and finds himself unable to enjoy the smallest pleasures given by life. Whether it is his much-successful wife Rhea or the ones who are closest to him, he is just enable to maintain his composure and hates everything that comes in his way, be it his surroundings, his loved ones, his wife and even his life! With a feeling of loneliness and disappointed all around him, sensitive Dev lashes out at any given opportunity. But Maya's entry in his life brings along a calming effect!

On the other hand Maya too has a handicap of her own that keeps her aloof from her husband. While on one hand she is unable to have children, on the other hand she is not able to give her husband the kind of love that any husband would deserve. Knowing very well that her feelings for Rishi have much left in them to be desired, she feels guilty about the fact but finds herself helpless in this situation. Doubting the very essence of the relationship they share, the love they feel for each other and the life they want to live from hereon, Maya finds her on the crossroads when she meets Dev! Passion ignites; sparks fly and true love beckons Dev and Maya when they meet. And then comes the dilemma of accepting the fact about their respective marriage partners on one hand and choosing a life of their choice on the other.

Meanwhile what's the kind of lives Rhea and Rishi want to live? A confident woman with strong beliefs and resolve about her career having equal, if not more, important as her marital life, Rhea is smart, successful and caring. She may not be the usual housewife that is generally accepted from a woman belonging to her social circle but that is hardly a worrying thought for her as she believes that everything counts in an individual's life, with love and luxuries holding equal importance.

Rishi too loves Maya enormously and it's her and only her who are of utmost importance to him. But a difficult situation comes his way when he realizes about Maya's handicap. Frustrated and depressed, he has his violent fits that further draw Maya away from him. Moreover the stylish persona of his is a complete opposite of the calm and composed nature of Maya! With lives of each of the four protagonists on the crossroads, what roles do the elders have to play?

Colorful by nature, Samarjit knows how to have fun and laugh all the way but when it comes to family matters that threaten to turn it all into a messy situation, he knows when, where and whom to give advice. A man who tries everything to get things back on track, he is the one for whom only two people matter most - Rishi and Maya. It holds true for Kamaljit too who has a righteous attitude towards the state of affairs and doesn't think twice about taking a stand when it comes to supporting the truth. An ideal mix of traditional values and a progressive mindset, she may seem unfazed by the situation at her home but puts her foot down when things go extreme. And this is what that makes her raise her voice in support of Rhea!

A complex story with complex situations characters and twists, KANK attempts at taking a precise look at contemporary relationships. As producer/director Karan Johar himself has to say, "The alarming statistics of failing marriages in the recent times, often made me wonder about the relevance of the institution to our society today. With men and women handling far more responsibilities than what was conventionally assigned to them centuries ago, it is natural for them to expect more from life for themselves. So in this complex scenario how much does one compromise on self-gratification for the sake of commitment? Or should one compromise at all?

A film that raises a lot of questions, prominently revolving around forcing us to question our age-old definitions of relationships and commitment, KANK is the biggest multistarrer to arrive this year.

Very Good Movie 5 Star Sean Kesavan

Really nice movie with a strong and realistic theme, unlike the usual masala bollywood movies. The movie brings out the real issue that couples face after getting into an extramarital relationship. The whole world will just watch, crying foul on their demeanour, but nobody offers any credible solution.

Karan Johar fails 3 Star member

After KKHH, K3G, and KHNH, Karan Johar has failed with KANK. The writing is really bad, but because of the big star cast, the great music, and great cinematography, the movie is definitely worth watching. Of all the performances, Amitabh was the best. He did well with the small role he had. Shahrukh was surprisingly the worse. Sad to say, his acting was actually laughable at times. Rani was good as usual, but nothing to boast about. Priety and Abhishek were fine as well. Its worth a watch, but don't expect too much from it. You'll be let down.

Sensitive subject 5 Star Mr. Bollywood

Sensitive subject but it happens more than often in Indian Culture…
Bollywood fans may not like the movie that much….but the subject that is portrayed the movie is a fact of life.

Fiasco 1 Star AKS

The role which had been given to Big B ( Amithabh) is really cheap!! Shahrukh Khan comes up with yet another lip-snarling, voice-quivering, eye-closing, head-shaking, scenery-chewing performance which is so overwrought that it brings down the entire cast with him.
Rani Mukherjee has a very poorly defined character but still does a ok job. Preity has very little screen-time and mercifully underplays her character. Abhishek Bachchan does no harm to his reputation as the best actor of the post-Khan generation and is the only person in the whole mess who looks really believable.

The best part of the movie is it finally ends.

nicely done 5 Star ab

Nicely done job on a bad plot. In older movies - like Kuch kuch hota hai and Hum Apke hain kaun, the couples about to be married realized that the Girl loves someone else and the groom backs out. Now here is a plot where the couple realize that they were not meant for each other way after getting married. This happens when the interests of each other are far from complementary. That is one reason there were arranged marriages in recent to distant past of India. This made the couple very compatible as the families had similar interests and outlook.
This movie has great direction and took a social dramatic topic and tried to put ease on how to end a situation. The western world has no problem with this sort of situation - it is a happening thing all over.
Dev - with a broken leg and a broken grand dream turns into a grouch. His wife's success and less time with family does not help either. He has really nothing to look forward to in his life. Maya marries due to obligations and can't get herself adapted to a fast paced party life of her husband, Rishi. First the two use each other's shoulder for crying and then trying things to patch up their home life. When all fails they give in to each others comfort.
Overall, good drama.
Worth watching. Great Cast and Director.

conflicted feelings 3 Star gaurijane

As a die-hard SRK fan I was anxious to see this film. I knew it would be different by the subject matter. Overall I liked the film but it is a stressful movie to watch. I think I was more upset by the really angry demeanor of SRK and his really terrible parenting in the film than the infidelity. He plays a very messed up person and really has no resolution within the film. Abishek glows and stands out in this role. Amit-ji plays a ludicrous over the top philanderer. Preity played a more sympathetic character than I expected. It is a movie worth watching and discussing, but not just a fun flick.
