PATITA' is the story of a girl, Radha (Usha Kiron). Her home is a hovel at the far end of a town and its only family member is her ailing father. Driven to desperation and in a frantic effort to get some money to give much needed medical aid to her father.Radha takes courage in both her hands and with a supreme mental effort proffers her palm before a young man Nirmal (Dev Anand) who suggest her for not begging & directs her to approach a friend of his who would give her work & she gets a job. Radha is lifted on the clouds of promised happiness when the young man Nirmal, who is none other than the owner of the mill she works in, proposes to her. The land-lord's Munim who has come to throw them out because of arrears rent, reality confronts her. Radha pleads with the land-lord's MUNIM who suggests that she should see his master and request him for some more time in which to pay the rent.Radha agrees to do so little realising that the land-lord Manohar was one of those devils in human shape. Radha, all alone in the big hall of the land-lord's house, becomes aware of the lustful designs of the man, too late. It is not known whether earth and the heavenly bodies stop in their tracks when such a crime is being perpetrated. But they might as well. When Radha's father comes to know the fate that has befallen his dear daughter, he gathers his strength to go out to punish the land-lord. But before his feeble body has crossed the threshold, he collapses and dies. Radha thinks of the only way to end her plight - that of committing suicide. But a young man Mastaram (Agha) who is obviously a waif dissuades her from making such an attempt. He takes her to his house where she gives birth to the child. Mastaram thinks that the poor little thing would be better looked after if it were to be entrusted to the care of an orphanage. But she decides that come what may she would bring up the child herself. She goes back to the mill she has served in only to be turned away by the manager. She requests to be admitted in the presence of the 'Seth' & she finds that the owner of the mill was none other than the Nirmal who had fallen in the love with her & had proposed marriage to her. Rather than face him she runs away. But the Nirmal follows her, learns her plight & also the fact that she is the mother of a child. Having loved Radha too well, Nirmal decided to marry her & does. What happens when the Nirmal's mother (Lalita Pawar) comes to know of the child. How Manohar who is the friend of the family utilises this situation to further his nefarious ends & ultimately meets his nemesis, are developments of the story better told on the screen than in cold print.
