Sonia [Isha Koppikar] is the owner of a casino in Goa. A successful entrepreneur, the only love in her life is her son. When the toddler suddenly goes missing, the lady is distraught and distressed. She offers a huge reward [Rs. 25 lacs] to anyone who can trace her son.
Raj [Shahid Kapoor] and Priya [Kareena Kapoor], two strangers from different backgrounds, accidentally spot the child and decide to split the reward money given by Sonia. But when they finally reach Sonia's mansion late at night, they find her murdered!
Raj and Priya panic and escape from the mansion. In the confusion that follows, Priya forgets her suitcase in the mansion. Soon, they are the chief suspects in the murder. The cop [Akshaye Khanna] realizes that this isn't an open-and-shut case, since a number of new suspects show up while the investigations are on.
The suspects include two couples [Johny Lever-Tanaaz / Paresh Rawal-Payal Rohatgi], a playboy [Upen Patel], a drunkard [Raj Zutshi] and the domestic help [Dinyar Contractor, Roshan Tirandaaz]. Who's the murderer? And what is the motive? |

A Campy Film Noir? |

I was genuinely surprised by 36 China Town. It was a tongue in cheek parody of a mystery film noir film. Shahid and Karena against work perfect chemistry and make the film work surprisingly well. This is clearly a comedy, not a drama/mystery. |

In 36 China Town, it is only Akshaye Khanna who makes a little impact. The actor keeps an inquisitive look in his eyes, maintains a stern demeanor and does his characteristic pursing of lips. Shahid Kapur ends up making faces in the name of acting. Kareena Kapoor enacts her part fine enough, but how one wishes the writers had etched a meatier character for her.
Paresh Rawal acquits himself despite some inane humour written for his character. Johnny Lever overacts. Upen Patel’s dubbed performance is nothing to write home about. The comedy track by Paresh Rawal and Johnny Lever is fine at times but an overemphasis on it. |

Nice story. Upen Patel as the Casanova in the casino makes an unusual stylish debut. He dances with confidence and holds his own even among the accomplished ensemble of actors.Shahid and Kareena as the couple on the run share a warmth that somewhere transcends the plot.36 Chinatown courts frivolity without falling flat on its slick face. |
