| Maya (Padmini Kohlapure) comes from a poor family and is deeply in love with a musician, Prem (Anil Kapoor). Before they can confess their feelings to each other, Maya is compelled to marry Dr. Anand (Naseeruddin Shah), a wealthy doctor, who’s much older than her. She is shattered and attempts to kill herself on her wedding night. Her compassionate husband saves her life and promises to reunite her with her lover. Dr. Anand confesses that he married only to fulfill the wishes of his dying mother and as soon as she passes away, Maya can be free…. |

| Amazing. This movie took its time revealing itself, but the story as a whole is beutiful and thought provoking. The theme of arranged marriage and it's place in Indian culture is explored through events in the life of a young Hindu girl (Padmini Kolhapure). My only beef with the movie is the ending.****Spoiler Alert*** The two men (played excellently by Anil Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah) go into a long debate on what happens to the mind and soul of a woman when she gets married, arguing over who has the right to Padmini as if she is a piece of meat or a vegetable at the green grocer's. And she's standing right there between them saying nothing. HUH??? Where is her voice in this "intellectual argument"?? Other than that point, the movie had a good mix of comedy, drama and romance. I highly recommend it for Anil, Nasir and Padmini fans. Enjoy! |
