Based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel of the same name, CHOKHER BALI is set in the pre-independence era, in the early 20th century Bengal. It is a psychological study of relationships between the sexes in a well-to-do family, of shifting eternal triangles, complex motivations, subtle play of emotions.

The story revolves around four protagonists -- Mahendra [Prosenjit], his friend Behari [Toto Roychowdhury], Mahendra's wife Ashalata [Raima Sen] and Ashalata's widowed friend Binodini [Aishwarya Rai].

"The eternal curse of Love – Its embrace soon turns into bondage."
- Rabindranath Tagore

The story is mainly about inter human relationships and psychological warfare among the characters during the early 20th century colonial Bengal. A story about relationship struggle, the struggle of a woman to rise above the ages old bonding of so called tradition and to acquire freedom for self identity and sexuality on one hand and India’s struggle for freedom from British rule on the other.
